Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, experienced a widespread outage on Friday, leaving thousands of users unable to access the service across several countries, according to outage-tracking website Downdetector.
Downdetector, which monitors service disruptions by aggregating user reports from multiple sources, showed that by 10:35 a.m. Eastern Time, more than 41,000 issues related to X had been reported in the United States. In the United Kingdom, users logged nearly 8,000 reports of disruptions, while more than 2,400 problems were recorded in India.
The actual number of affected users may differ from the figures displayed on Downdetector, as the data is based on reports voluntarily submitted by users rather than confirmed platform-wide metrics.
X did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters regarding the cause of the outage.
The disruption follows a similar service outage earlier this week, when more than 28,300 issues were reported in the United States and over 8,000 in the United Kingdom.
While the platform appeared to be gradually coming back online for many users later in the day, the exact cause of the outage remains unclear.
In previous instances, outages affecting X have been linked to broader internet infrastructure issues, including a major disruption involving web services provider Cloudflare in November.
