KARACHI: Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has asserted that Sindh has been conducting at least double the number of coronavirus tests of any province since the first coronavirus case surfaced in the country.
Addressing a press conference today (Sunday) in Karachi, CM Murad said, “Sindh was conducting 11,790 coronavirus tests per million. Punjab is doing 5,359 tests, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is doing 4,898 and Balochistan is conducting 4,316 tests.”
He further said, “However, still I am not satisfied with Sindh’s testing capacity. The health department is working on increasing testing, and the field staff had also tested positive.”
“Today we are in control of the coronavirus situation to a certain extent. However, I don’t think we are fully in control, and it is up to us how we move forward,” he remarked.
The Chief Minister warned against declaring an early victory on the country’s efforts to battle the coronavirus pandemic. He also urged the people of Pakistan to get tested.
Commenting on the COVID-19 restrictions, CM Murad informed that the motive behind introducing restrictions was to curb the spread so that the government could work on improving health facilities.
He also highlighted all the steps taken by the government to curb the coronavirus outbreak. CM Sindh said, “Right now, doctors also don’t know how to treat Covid-19. There’s something new every day.”
“Until a treatment is figured out, we have to identify possible patients, we have to trace, and test them so that we can stop the spread of the virus,” he said.
He also raised concerns about the upcoming religious events including Eidul Azha, Muharram, and Rabi-ul-Awal. “Upcoming months will be difficult and people will gather and you can’t stop them,” he concluded.
