ISLAMABAD: Federal Ministry of Energy and Power Division has refuted K-Electric’s claims of non-supply of ample fuel from the federal authorities to meet the energy demands of Karachi.
According to a ministry’s spokesperson, the K-Electric management has itself confessed receiving 290 MMCFD gas instead of 190 MMCFD from the government authorities.
The spokesperson further said that the KE representatives accepted this in front of the Governor Sindh Imran Ismail and Planning Minister Asad Umar on Sunday.
“Linking the issue of fuel supply with prolonged power outages is denying the actual situation,” he added. The spokesperson further said that the city’s sole power supplier had accepted that it generated 89 percent of power through fuel supply.
The spokesperson claimed that the K-Electric had failed to make the required investment in its power distribution system. “Setting aside fuel supply the KE system was even not able to lift the electricity,” he added.
He said, “The power supplying company faces 100 megawatt to 200 MG shortage of electricity in peak hours,” adding that the company uses unannounced load shedding due to shortage in power generation.
He reiterated that the federal government had offered to provide 1000MW to KE, but the company will have to build a 500KV grid to receive the required amount of electricity.
Earlier on Friday, during a public hearing KE CEO Moonis Alvi said that the company’s plants ran out of oil due to which it had to resort to load shedding.
It is worth mentioning here that K-Electric held the federal government responsible for the prolonged power outages in Karachi.
