KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) opened the new week on a markedly positive note Monday, with the benchmark KSE‑100 Index climbing 3,275 points, or 1.97 per cent, to 166,269.73 in early trade.
The rally comes as a sharp reversal after last week’s steep 4.5 per cent decline, when the index shed 7,678 points amid regional tensions and economic uncertainty.
Broader sentiment was upbeat, with 248 scrips advancing against 44 declining and 268 remaining unchanged.
Trading activity was brisk, as 26.78 million shares worth Rs1.22 billion changed hands across 12,834 transactions. Key indices also posted gains, with the KSE‑30 rising 2.13pc, the All‑Share Index up 1.77pc, and the Banking Index advancing 2.34pc.
Last week’s downturn, it may be recalled, had wiped out Rs 854 billion in market capitalization, leaving investors rattled by rising interest rates, surging global oil prices, and uncertainty over external inflows. Analysts described the mood as one of “hopelessness,” with equities losing eight psychological levels and sectoral weakness spreading across banking, energy, cement, and industrial counters.
Today’s rebound, however, suggests bargain‑hunting and renewed confidence in economic stability measures.
Gains in banking and energy stocks point to improved liquidity expectations, while the breadth of advances indicates investors are positioning for sustained momentum. Market watchers cautioned, however, that clarity on the IMF’s upcoming board review and inflationary trends will be critical to sustaining the rally.
