Pakistan has launched a nationwide smart metering programme as part of efforts to digitise its power distribution system, the government said on Monday, in what it described as a major step towards modernising the energy sector.
The Power Division said it has signed a transaction advisory services agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), paving the way for large-scale deployment of smart meters across the country.
Under the plan, around 10 million electricity connections will be fitted with smart meters, with both domestic and foreign investment expected in the project, the Power Division said.
The government said that the initiative aims to reduce electricity theft, improve billing transparency and enhance revenue recovery, while also strengthening efficiency in the distribution system.
Officials said that a competitive international bidding process had helped cut smart meter costs by about 40 per cent.
Under the decision, installation of smart meters will be mandatory for all new electricity connections, while the issuance of conventional meters will be phased out as part of the shift towards a digital system.
All three-phase consumers will be gradually transitioned to smart meters, while commercial and industrial users will also be integrated into the system, according to officials.
Authorities are also working to address issues related to faulty meters, with implementation expected to accelerate following approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
