China has abruptly removed Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong from his post, with authorities offering no official reason for the decision, prompting speculation about a possible reshuffle or disciplinary action within the government.
The brief statement, citing a decision by the State Council, did not provide any reasons or specify when the removal took effect.
Sun’s most recent public activities, as listed on the Foreign Ministry’s website, included meetings with the ambassadors of Brunei and Malaysia on March 13.
Just days earlier, he had also met Pakistan’s ambassador to China to discuss bilateral cooperation, as noted in a post by the diplomat on social media.
The same notice also confirmed the removal of An Lusheng, who had been serving as deputy director of the National Railway Administration.
Changes involving senior officials frequently draw attention in China, particularly amid the government’s ongoing anti-corruption drive.
