While some simpler, manually adjustable “autofocus” reading glasses exist for specific power ranges, cutting-edge versions use sensors and tunable lenses for dynamic adjustment, offering a potential improvement over traditional multifocal lenses.
How They Work
Eye Tracking

Availability
A modern Finnish eyewear company, IXI, is preparing to introduce smart glasses that can automatically adjust focus according to the wearer’s eye needs.
The company says the glasses weigh only 22 grams and feel like regular spectacles. The battery and electronics are hidden in the frame in such a way that the wearer cannot notice them. However, they need to be charged daily, via a magnetic charging port built into the frame’s arm.
IXI’s glasses will be manufactured in Finland and will first launch in Europe, followed by sales in the U.S. after FDA approval. Initially, only two or three designs will be available in different widths.
