While critics generally praised its emotional depth and character growth, many fans and reviewers found it felt like a “bridge” or “filler” leading up to the two-hour series finale scheduled for New Year’s Eve.
The “Bridge” Problem
Most reviewers noted that these three episodes were primarily concerned with “setting the board.” Some felt the narrative “paled in comparison” to Volume 1, with long, dialogue-driven scenes that occasionally slowed the pacing.
A major highlight was the focus on character relationships. The reconciliation between Steve and Dustin was widely cited as a series-best moment for both actors.
Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) and Sadie Sink (Max) received high marks for their performances. Newcomer Nell Fisher (Holly) was also praised as a “gold star” addition to the cast.
The volume finally explained the nature of the Upside Down, describing it as an “astral bridge” or “wormhole” between Earth and “Dimension X” (The Abyss).
While some found these answers satisfying, others felt the exposition was overwhelming or “industrial-grade trolling.”
Will Byers’ Coming Out
Episode 7 featured a “character-defining” scene where Will officially comes out to the group, explaining how his fear of rejection was something Vecna tried to exploit.
Reactions were split; some found it a moving culmination of his arc, while others felt the timing just before a world-ending battle was awkward.
Nancy and Jonathan
Their relationship remained a point of frustration for some, with a scene involving a “presumed break-up” (or “un-proposal”) being described as confusing and lacking emotional payoff.
The return of Eleven’s “sister,” Kali (Eight), was a significant surprise. While her involvement deepened the stakes, some reviewers felt her character remained “one-note” or “lurking on the edge.”
The volume ends with the “board set” for a final confrontation at the MAC-Z gate.
With only the two-hour finale remaining, critics remain hopeful but cautious about whether the Duffer Brothers can successfully tie up the remaining 17 character arcs.
