During Narendra Modi’s tenure, it has become increasingly difficult for Muslim women in India to wear the hijab.
A recent incident highlighting intolerance occurred in Patna, Bihar, where Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, an ally of the BJP, pulled the veil of a Muslim female doctor during a public ceremony.
According to Indian media, the Ministry of AYUSH had organized an event to distribute appointment letters to AYUSH doctors.
While presenting her appointment letter, Muslim doctor Nusrat Parveen, fully covered in a burqa with her face veiled, had her veil forcibly removed by Nitish Kumar, who questioned her about it. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, present at the event, tried to intervene.
The incident was captured on video and went viral on social media, drawing widespread anger from the public and criticism from opposition parties.
The opposition party Rashtriya Janata Dal sharply criticized Nitish Kumar, questioning his state of mind.
The Congress party also condemned the act, stating that if a senior state official behaves this way, it raises serious concerns about the safety of women in the state. They demanded that Nitish Kumar resign immediately over this shameful act.
