When Valve, the company behind Steam, the world’s largest PC gaming platform, announced the Steam Machine, it promised to bridge the gap between PC gaming power and console-style convenience.
Years later, the concept still fascinates gamers who want the flexibility of a PC with the simplicity of a plug-and-play console.
What is a Steam Machine?
A Steam Machine is a gaming console designed to run SteamOS, Valve’s Linux-based operating system built specifically for gaming. Unlike traditional consoles (like PlayStation or Xbox), Steam Machines were open and customizable, allowing users to upgrade hardware or install other operating systems.
Valve partnered with several major PC manufacturers to produce Steam Machines in different configurations. Each system came preloaded with SteamOS, providing direct access to the Steam game library, home to thousands of titles.
The goal was simple: combine the performance and versatility of a gaming PC with the living-room-friendly experience of a console.
Steam Controller and Big Picture Mode
The Steam Machine launch was accompanied by two key innovations:
Steam Controller – Designed to replace the traditional mouse and keyboard setup, featuring dual trackpads, haptic feedback, and customizable inputs.
Big Picture Mode – A console-style interface for Steam that worked perfectly on TVs, making navigation with a controller seamless.
Technical Specifications
CPU: 6 cores / 12 threads, based on AMD Zen 4 architecture, up to ~4.8 GHz, with a 30 W TDP.
GPU: Custom AMD RDNA 3 chip with 28 compute units and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory.
Memory: 16 GB DDR5.
Storage: Two options – 512 GB or 2 TB SSD (M.2 2230) plus a microSD slot for expansion.
Connectivity and Ports: Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth, DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0, several USB ports, and 1 Gbps Ethernet.
Design: Compact size (~162 × 156 × 152 mm), lightweight and built to fit easily in a living room setup.
Software: Runs SteamOS with Proton compatibility, allowing most Windows games to run seamlessly.
Release date
The Steam Machine release date has not been announced. Neither has the release dates for the Steam Controller or Steam Frame.
Though, considering how the Steam Machine and Controller will be offered as a bundle, it’s safe to assume these devices will share the same release date.
The Legacy
Even though the Steam Machine project didn’t achieve mainstream success, it paved the way for future innovations.
Its biggest successor? The Steam Deck, launched in 2022, a handheld gaming PC that successfully delivers on the original Steam Machine vision of portable, open, PC-powered gaming.
