Following the passage of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, the National Assembly approved the Pakistan Army Act 2025.
Under the proposed amendment, a new notification will be issued for the Army Chief as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). The Army Chief’s tenure will restart from the date of this new notification.
According to the bill, the Chief of Defence Forces will oversee the restructuring and integration of all branches of the Pakistan Army. The Prime Minister, based on the CDF’s recommendation, will appoint the Commander of the National Strategic Command.
The tenure of the Commander of the National Strategic Command will be three years, with the option of one renewal for another three years.
The bill also states that the post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) will be abolished effective November 27.
Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar explained that the Army Chief will now also serve as the Chief of Defence Forces, holding a five-year term.
The Prime Minister will appoint the Chief of Defence Forces, and the tenure will commence from the date of appointment.
In addition, the National Assembly also approved the Pakistan Air Force (Amendment) Act 2025, which removes all references to the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.
