The election process for the Mayor of New York City has entered its final stage, where early voting has been completed and nearly five million registered voters will now exercise their right to vote on November 4 to elect the city’s next mayor.
According to the New York City Board of Elections, a total of 734,317 votes were cast during the past nine days, which is four times higher than the mayoral elections of 2021.
This extraordinary increase in early voting has further energized the election atmosphere, and all major parties are busy mobilizing their supporters.
According to election experts, the rising trend of voting shows that public interest this time is much higher than in the past, especially at a time when the leadership change in New York City is also being considered significant for the overall political direction of the country.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his support for former governor Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral election and has urged citizens not to vote for the left-wing Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani.
This statement came a day before the mayoral election. President Trump said on Sunday that if Mamdani is elected mayor, he would hesitate to send federal funds to New York, as, according to him, giving money to a city led by a communist is equivalent to wasting funds.
On the other hand, according to surveys, Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani is leading over independent candidate Cuomo, while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa stands in third place.
Interestingly, Trump also refrained from supporting his fellow party member Sliwa, saying that voting for Sliwa is equivalent to voting in favor of Mamdani.
Who is Zohran Mamdani?
Zohran Mamdani is a 33-year-old Muslim and Ugandan-born American politician who is a member of the New York State Assembly. He made history by defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic Party primary and became the party’s first Muslim candidate for New York City mayor.
Zohran Mamdani belongs to a diverse intellectual and artistic family background. His mother is renowned filmmaker Mira Nair, while his father, Professor Mahmood Mamdani, teaches at Columbia University.
Zohran Mamdani studied at Bronx High School of Science and later earned a degree in African Studies from Bowdoin College.
Before entering politics, he worked in legal consulting for low-income citizens on housing issues.
In his election campaign, he has presented several reform plans to make New York a more livable and affordable city, including a rent freeze policy, free bus service, affordable municipal grocery markets, and free childcare facilities for all children.
