Despite government measures, sugar prices in Pakistan have surged to an all-time high, reaching Rs. 220 per kilogram in major cities, adding to the financial burden on consumers.
According to the Bureau of Statistics, within just one week, the price of sugar per kilogram increased by up to Rs. 23 in Sargodha, and by Rs. 5 in Karachi and Hyderabad. As a result, the maximum price of sugar in the country has reached Rs. 220 per kilogram.
The data further state that the price of sugar per kilogram has risen to Rs. 200 in Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Sargodha, while in Hyderabad, the maximum price has increased from Rs. 190 to Rs. 195 per kilogram.
According to the Bureau of Statistics, the average price of sugar per kilogram has decreased by 12 paisas over the past week, bringing the national average to Rs. 188.69 per kilogram.
The report notes that last week, the country’s average sugar price was Rs. 188.81 per kilogram, whereas a year ago, it stood at Rs. 132.47 per kilogram.
Meanwhile, market sources report that sugar prices in Lahore have seen a sharp rise, with sugar now being sold at Rs. 200 to Rs. 220 per kilogram.
