Meta has announced it will officially discontinue its standalone Messenger desktop apps for Windows and macOS on December 15.
Once the shutdown process begins, users will see an in-app notification and will have a 60-day grace period to continue using the app before it’s permanently deactivated.
The Messenger desktop app has already been removed from the Apple App Store, and after December 15, desktop users trying to access Messenger will be redirected to Facebook.com. If you don’t have a Facebook account, you’ll be taken to Messenger.com instead.

During this transition, Meta urges users to enable Secure Storage and set a PIN within the Messenger app.
Once this is done, your chat history will sync across devices, including the web version. The setup process is simple and ensures you won’t lose your conversations when switching platforms.
