The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has made a strategic decision to introduce new currency notes across all denominations, aiming to enhance the security and design of the banknotes.
Governor Jamil Ahmed announced that the new notes will feature international-standard security measures, updated designs, and unique serial numbers. These notes are expected to be rolled out by December this year, eventually replacing the old ones currently in circulation.
Since 2005, the SBP has been gradually introducing new series of banknotes, including denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 rupees. These newer notes are more durable and incorporate advanced security features. In 2023, the SBP also issued a commemorative 75-rupee note to mark the nation’s 75th anniversary of independence.
As the sole authority responsible for printing banknotes, the SBP manages the country’s credit and currency systems. The SBP also uses its website and public awareness campaigns to educate the public about the features and security attributes of the banknotes and coins.
