Doctors and nurses at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Lahore are protesting following the alleged rape of a five-year-old girl at the hospital.
According to police reports on Tuesday, the child was allegedly assaulted by a sanitation worker on Monday on the third floor of the hospital. The child’s cries during the attack alerted nearby attendants, who intervened, overpowered the worker, and handed him over to the police after administering a beating.
This horrific incident has ignited outrage among the medical staff at the hospital. The protest, led by Punjab YDA President Dr. Shoaib Niazi and Dr. Azam Saeed, president of the YDA chapter at the hospital, saw participation from hospital staff, students, and members of Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU).
The protesters carried placards with slogans such as “Stop raping girls” and “Punish the rapists.” Tensions escalated as doctors and students became more aggressive, calling in additional supporters who unlocked the auditorium.
Prof. Dr. Moeenuddin, Superintendent of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said that the hospital promptly intervened and lodged a complaint with the police against the suspect. He added that the employee’s services have been terminated by the company responsible, following the recommendations of the hospital’s management.
