KARACHI: At least four people died in separate rain-related incidents in the metropolis during the fourth spell of monsoon rains today (Friday).
According to details, three of the people lost their lives due to electrocution, while a 12-year-old boy died after drowning in a canal near Bhains Colony in Karachi’s Surjani Town.
A 24-year-old woman was electrocuted in Baloch Colony area. In another incident, health authorities informed that an 18-year-old, Kaiser Nawaz, died due to electrocution in Landhi-4, while a 30-year-old man also died after suffering an electric shock in Lyari.
Multiple roads, including Sharae Faisal – the city’s main artery – were soon flooded by rainwater. Other localities worst affected included Nursery, Soldier Bazaar, Garden, Saddar, Burnes Road, I.I. Chundrigar Road, North Karachi, New Karachi, Mehmoodabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal and others.
Meanwhile, the city’s electricity infrastructure crumbled under heavy showers as more than 400 feeders tripped in different areas, causing an immediate power outage in multiple neighbourhoods.
Earlier today (Friday), the Met Office had said the heavy downpour alongside thunderstorm was forecast to commence any time in Karachi. The PMD informed that to the PMD, the current rain spell to last until tomorrow (Saturday).
Earlier on Thursday, at least three people were killed in Karachi, where two people were killed due to electrocution in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Lyari, and another man drowned in the Lyari river near Maripur.
Sources at the K-Electric informed that more than 600 feeders tripped in different areas as soon as the downpour hit Karachi. The rain also uprooted trees in some areas, particularly in Karachi’s Garden locality.
