NEW YORK: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has expressed deep concern over the current situation in the Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
The Council met at the request of Pakistan on the occasion of completion of one year of Indian illegal actions to abrogate the special status of the occupied territory
The closed-door meeting was presided over by Ambassador of Indonesia and was briefed on the current situation. The Security Council members expressed hope that relevant parties would exercise restraint and properly resolve relevant issues through dialogue to jointly maintain regional peace and stability.
Chinese envoy to the UN Zhang Jun underlined that the Kashmir issue is a dispute left from the past and should be resolved peacefully in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreements.
Earlier Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi held a telephonic conversation with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Retno L.P. Marsudi. Indonesia is the President of the UN Security Council for the month of August.
Referring to his letter to the UNSC President, the foreign minister underscored that his request to the UNSC to convene a meeting reflected the urgency in addressing the deteriorating human rights situation in occupied Kashmir.
He also referred to India’s blatant attempt to change the demography of the occupied territory in violation of the UNSC resolutions and international law, and increased ceasefire violations from the Indian side cumulatively pose threat to regional and international peace and security.
The foreign minister underscored that the intensified ceasefire violations and enhanced tensions necessitated strengthening of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).
He stated that the situation required attention of the UNSC and steps to prevent escalation and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. He hoped the Council would shoulder its responsibility for maintenance of international peace and security in an effective manner.
