Women empowerment crucial to counter challenges: Hunaid Lakhani

KARACHI: Former Chancellor of the Iqra University Hunaid Lakhani has stressed the need for socio-economic independence of women to counter the prevalent challenges like hatred, extremism, violence and terrorism.
While addressing the awards distributing ceremony of online painting competition at Karachi University he said “Females in society are still facing a lot of challenges and we have to create awareness regarding women empowerment to minimize their problems.
He said women in workplaces and educational institutions should get support and should not be sidelined at all. Lakhani said the KU has established various societies for the students to promote positive student activities, and they are undoubtedly highlighting the name of KU in different co-curricular activities.
The Office of the Students Advisor, University of Karachi, and Voice of Sindh jointly organized the competition in which students from various varsities across the country participated in three categories including sketching, painting, and digital arts.
The purpose of the event was to promote healthy extracurricular activities and encourage and promote the talent of the youth. The competition received an overwhelming response and large numbers of samples were submitted from Higher Education Commission recognized universities.
The paint in the pandemic contest was judged by Anam Shakil and Syeda Sheeza Ali. The theme of the contest was life in quarantine.
Saadya Haque, a student of Pharmacy Faculty, University of Karachi, was declared first in the sketching category while Sana Naz, Department of Physics in KU was the winner of the painting category whereas Aisha Malik from Visual Studies Faculty, KU, bagged the first position in the digital art category.
They received the winning prize of Rs10, 000 each from the Patron-in-Chief of the Voice of Sindh Hunaid Lakhani. Lakhani lauded that KU was used to be the hub or curriculum and co-curriculum activities and now once again it has started launching such activities by providing platforms through its various students’ societies.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi briefed the participants about different students’ societies and their achievements. He shared that a group of students had released a national song on August 14 last year.
He expressed that “Students can demonstrate their skills and talents if we provide them the chance and platform”. Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi said that students could learn a lot from participating in competitions and winner such events would boost their confidence and strengthen their self-belief.
