COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is planning to start up a T20 league, Lanka Premier League, in August, even as uncertainty continues to cloud inbound tours of India and Bangladesh.
According to an international cricket website, the Sri Lankan cricket board believes it has an opportunity this year to safely host a tournament with significant foreign involvement after the country managed the COVID-19 crisis better than many other nations.
The report further informed that SLC CEO Ashley de Silva has written a letter to other boards regarding the prospect of a Lankan Premier League, while international players have also been approached.
“Tournament planning, though, remains in its very preliminary stages, with no official announcement having yet come from the board,” the report added.
The report also stated that the Sri Lankan cricket board is working on a theory that the premier league may feature five teams and could last a little over three weeks.
The cricket board is also trying to host India for three ODIs and T20s, while Bangladesh for three-test matches. They are also in contention to host Asia Cup 2020 in September.
An SLC official confirmed to international cricket website that the country’s government approval had been granted not just for a potential LPL, but also for the India, Bangladesh and Asia Cup tours.
It is worth mentioning here that all eyes are on West Indies tour of England, as this will be the first international cricket activity to take place after a gap of almost three months.
