KARACHI: In solidarity with ‘Black Lives Matter’, Pakistani truck artist Haider Ali has pained a mural of George Floyd in one of his latest works.
Haider showed his solidarity with George Floyd in traditional Pakistani form. With Floyd’s face in the centre, words like Justice, Equality, and Black Lives Matter are painted around it along with their Urdu translations.
The mural features a saying that goes, “Hum kaaley hain tou kia hua, dil waley hain (So what if we’re dark-skinned? We’ve got big hearts).” According to Haider, the starry night background symbolises the importance of the colour black itself.
This also includes the Muslims in Indian Occupied Kashmir, Palestine, and Myanmar, who are regularly subjected to cruelty on the basis of religion.
Truck art is a famous art form in Pakistan and can be seen on trucks and buses plying there. Haider Ali has painted murals, structures, benches, and trucks in the truck art style of Pakistan across the world.
He came to limelight in 2002 when he worked on a Pakistani truck in North America for the Smithsonian. His work has been exhibited at museums and institutions across the world.
The murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis in late May ignited fiery protests around the world. People are protesting in favour of the Black Lives Matter movement.
