ISLAMABAD: A delegation of religious leaders met Prime Minister Imran Khan and assured their full support on the matters relating to congregational prayers at mosques during the holy month of Ramazan.
According to a statement issued by PM Office today, it was decided in the meeting that mosques will remain open during the holy month of Ramazan by adopting all necessary steps against the COVID-19.
The statement further said the religious scholars strongly supported the lockdown strategy of Prime Minister Imran Khan and assured him full coordination to implement the decision of protective steps taken by the government in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak.
The delegation included Pir Amin ul Hasnat Shah, Pir Shams ul Amin, Pir Naqeeb ur Rehman, Maulana Muhammad Hanif Jalandhari, Maulana Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi, Maulana Hamid ul Haq Haqqani and others.
Those who participated through video-link included Governor Sindh Imran Ismail, Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman and Mufti Taqi Usmani.
Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood, Minister for Religious Affairs Noor ul Haq Qadri, PM’s Special Assistant on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan and Chairman Council of Islamic Ideology Dr Qibla Ayaz attended the meeting.
On Saturday, President Arif Alvi had announced that mosques will remain open for Tarawih prayers in Ramazan. Alvi had urged citizens and religious leaders alike to exercise discipline and take precautions against the coronavirus pandemic.
The president had maintained that the people of Pakistan wanted to see their political and religious leaders on the same page and any conflict in this regard would be counterproductive.
The president said he was hopeful that all preventive measures will be taken to curb the spread of coronavirus during Ramazan.
He had asked religious leaders across the country to ensure that there was space between people when they congregated inside mosques for prayers.
