KARACHI: The election commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the schedule of fresh delimitation of the local government bodies in Sindh on Monday.
The announcement was made after an end to the four-year term of local councils in Sindh province. According to a notification, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) notified the fresh delimitation of the union councils, union committees and the wards under its supervision.
The notification further said local government bodies elections will be held in Sindh after new limits of the bodies will be decided. As per schedule, the process of local bodies’ delimitation will be completed between 09 to 22 September.
Preliminary delimitation of local councils in Sindh will be displayed on September 23.
The local government election will be announced after the limits of the councils finalized, according to the election commission.
It worth mentioning here that the Sindh High Court on Monday issued notices to parties over a petition against new delimitation of local councils for local government polls in Sindh.
A petition filed in the high court prayed that final data of the national census yet to be released and argued that before the final results of the population census delimitation process for election could not be completed.
It also pleaded that the provincial government is directed to release all the dues to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation including the release of its share of Octroi Zila Tax (OZT) along with markup and additional markup.
The bench summoned reply of the Bureau of Statistics, the election commission and other parties by September 24.
Meanwhile, the provincial government dissolved the local government bodies upon the completion of their four-year constitutional term.
According to the official notification by the Sindh government, the service period of the elected local government representatives ended on August 31, 2020, and all local government councils had been dissolved.
The notification directed all the outgoing representatives, mayors, deputy mayors, chairpersons and vice-chairpersons to surrender the government-provided cars and other facilities.
