GENEVA: The World Health Organization has warned that a lack of leadership and unity is more dangerous than the COVID-19 pandemic.
“How is it difficult for humans to unite and fight a common enemy that is killing people indiscriminately?” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus asked.
“Are we unable to distinguish or identify the common enemy?” he asked. The world’s lack of solidarity, not the coronavirus is the biggest threat we face,” Tedros said.
He added that divisions among countries and people give an advantage to a virus that has been holding the world hostage for months.

The WHO had earlier urged COVID-19 affected countries to wake up to the realities on the ground instead of bickering, and to take control. “People need to wake up. The data is not lying. The situation on the ground is not lying,” WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan said.
The Americans are the hardest-hit region, with most cases and deaths registered in the United States, and with numbers skyrocketing in several countries in Latin America.
