ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has witnessed the agreement-signing ceremony of 1124 MW Kohala hydropower project held in Islamabad today (Thursday).
According to details, several federal ministers, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing, and other senior officials witnessed the signing ceremony. The project would be completed with a cost of $2.5 billion.
According to the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB), the agreement was signed between the Chinese ‘Three Gorges’ company, PPIB, and the AJK government.
The Chinese company will provide an investment of Rs 2.4 billion in this regard. The project will be constructed at the eastern river of Jhelum. PPIB informed that the project will annually generate 5 million units of low-cost electricity.
On the occasion, PM Imran said that the PTI-led federal government was focused to provide clean and affordable energy to people. “The past governments had not taken interest in hydropower sector for generating electricity through water resources,” he added.
The Prime Minister further said that the electricity produced through imported fuel made electricity costly besides the negative impact on the environment. He also assured that the hydropower project will also generate job opportunities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
