QUETTA: Former federal minister and mass communication expert Javed Jabbar has announced his resignation from the 10th National Finance Commission (NFC).
Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal had nominated him as a non-statutory member from Balochistan to the 10th NFC constituted by President Dr Arif Alvi.
The chief minister announced the resignation and said the Javed Jabbar has voluntarily resigned from the position, adding that it is “sad to see how some self-centred people made disinformation about him.”
He said that Javed Jabbar was a “man of knowledge, experience, depth on Balochistan” and on NFC. He said that those who criticised him shall realise it.
Javed Jabbar’s nomination to the 10th NFC as a member of Balochistan has stoked controversy as it does not hail from the province.
On May 28, the Islamabad High Court had issued notices to the federal government on a petition challenging the composition of the 10th NFC. Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb heard the petition moved by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Khurram Dastagir Khan.
Earlier, President Dr Arif Alvi constituted the 10th NFC under Article 160(1) of the Constitution to ensure just distribution of resources between the federal government and the four provinces.
The Finance Division had notified the new 10-member Commission. Finance Adviser Hafeez Sheikh will be the chairman of NFC comprising of the four provincial finance ministers. Under the constitution, the president has to announce a new NFC after every five years.
