WASHINGTON: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has revealed the complete geologic map of the moon using decades of data.
According to details, NASA has to prepare for new missions to the moon, and for that, it has revealed the new map of the moon which will help future missions towards their lunar space journey.
The new map will likely play a pertinent role in fulfilling NASA’s goal. Termed as the ‘Unified Geologic Map of the Moon’, the map looks like a rainbow gobstopper.
The map also consists of charts based on years of geological surveys of the lunar surface, dating as far back as when humans first stepped foot on the moon. It is intended not only as a scientific and educational tool, but it could also prove to be valuable for future crewed missions to the moon.
In a statement, Corey Fortezzo, USGS geologist and lead author on this work said, “This map is a culmination of a decades-long project, it provides vital information for new scientific studies by connecting the exploration of specific sites on the moon with the rest of the lunar surface.”
The near side of the Moon can be seen full of pinks that includes the Imbrian era formation, taking place about 3.5 billion years ago. The Moon’s surface was hit by many asteroids during this period.
