TikTok is preparing to broaden its communication tools by introducing new features in its direct messaging system. In the coming weeks, users will be able to send voice messages, short videos, and multiple images in both private and group chats, according to the company.
These updates will be accessible to all TikTok accounts that already have access to direct messaging. However, spokesperson JaShel Jones clarified that accounts belonging to users under 16 will not see these changes, as TikTok restricts messaging features to older accounts.
The rollout will take place gradually, with all eligible users gaining access within a few weeks. Once active, the update will allow people to send voice recordings up to one minute long. The process is straightforward: pressing and holding the microphone button begins recording, and releasing it sends the message automatically. To prevent unintentional sends, users can cancel by dragging the recording up or sideways before releasing the button.
In addition, TikTok will now support sharing up to nine images or videos within a single conversation thread, with videos also limited to one minute. These changes bring TikTok’s messaging functions closer to established platforms, creating a more versatile space for both private communication and content sharing.
