The ultimate election year: 2024 will shape a new world order

In what is anticipated to be a monumental election year, nearly half of the global population will be impacted by the electoral events of 2024. This suggests the likelihood of significant policy changes and geopolitical shifts among nations that will shape the world order.

As the world prepares for a multitude of elections scheduled across various countries, a total of 70 elections spanning 40 countries are set to take place in 2024. These elections are expected to have global implications, influencing the trajectory of the next decade.

Among the nations heading to the polls are 15 African nations, 9 American nations, 11 Asian nations, 22 European nations, and 4 countries in Oceania. Additionally, elections for the European Union and United Nations Security Council will occur, representing Africa, the Asia-Pacific Group, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Western European and others group.

However, the focus will be on four major elections, featuring the four largest political entities globally, housing nearly 2.3 billion people and boasting a combined GDP of approximately $42 trillion.

Key elections to watch include Russia’s presidential polls in March, India’s general elections in April and May, the European Union’s bloc-wide elections in June and July, and the United States’ legislative and presidential elections in November.

Taiwan’s presidential election in January 2024 is of particular interest due to strained China-Taiwan relations. The outcome may impact tensions in the short run, with potential economic integration across the Taiwan Strait. However, long-term concerns about Taiwan’s future will likely persist.

In Europe, the election of a new EU Commission, along with elections in the UK, may lead to economic difficulties and affect policies on climate, tech regulation, energy, protectionism, and the EU budget.

India eagerly awaits the Lok Sabha elections, with nearly one billion voters casting their ballots. The Modi-led BJP government seeks a third consecutive term, focusing on business-friendly reforms and maintaining a neutral stance on issues such as the Russia-Ukraine war.

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is poised to secure a fourth consecutive term in January, despite opposition party boycotts, while Pakistan faces political turmoil ahead of its February election.

The U.S. presidential race in November is closely watched for its impact on Western unity and policies toward the Middle East and Russia. The potential for former President Donald Trump securing a second term is considered a significant global risk.

In Russia, President Vladimir Putin may seek a fifth term in the March elections, coinciding with Ukraine’s presidential election. While alternatives to Putin are limited, electoral dynamics, including protests, may reflect the public mood amid conflict and sanctions.

Celebrating the spirit of democracy, Mexico’s June elections could make history with the potential election of its first woman president, Claudia Sheinbaum, running on behalf of the Morena party.
