WASHINGTON: The arrest of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan from the Islamabad High Court premises has garnered a reaction from the United States as well, with the White House and State Department urging authorities in Pakistan to respect democratic principles, as well as the country’s constitution and law.

Taking a step forward, US Congressman Brad Sherman has voiced his concern, stating that Imran Khan’s arrest appears to be a “military coup” rather than an impartial application of justice.
In an exclusive interview with Voice of America, Congressman Sherman further expressed his desire for Imran Khan to be live-streamed 24 hours a day to assure his supporters of his safety. He also called for PTI leaders and workers to be released, stating that their arrests were inconsistent with the argument of corruption. Sherman emphasized the need for elections to be held on time so that political parties can participate in elections and run the country.
Another US Congressman, André Carson, has also expressed his concerns about recent measures to target government critics in Pakistan, calling on the Pakistani government to show greater commitment to freedom of expression and assembly.

The White House has emphasized its demand for the rule of law and democratic principles to be respected worldwide, while US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that he hopes Pakistan’s actions will be in accordance with the law and the constitution.
