KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday warned that another heatwave is expected to hit the metropolis from May 7, even as the city continues to swelter under current high temperatures.
Deputy Director of the Meteorological Department, Anjum Nazir Zaigham, stated that while the city is experiencing intense heat today, with the mercury expected to touch 43 degrees Celsius, a slight reprieve is likely from Tuesday (tomorrow). Following this brief respite, temperatures are expected to stabilize around 38 degrees Celsius.
However, the official cautioned that the ongoing spell is far from over. Mirroring conditions in other parts of Sindh, Karachi is forecast to brace for a fresh heatwave cycle commencing May 7, which officials fear may further exacerbate the daily struggles of the city’s residents.
Outlook for mid-May
Looking ahead, the PMD forecast suggests that the relief will be short-lived. Temperatures are likely to climb once again after May 13, indicating that the mid-May period will remain exceptionally hot.
Safety advisory
In view of the persistent heat and the anticipated meteorological shifts, experts have advised citizens to exercise caution. The public has been urged to:
Restrict outdoor movement: Avoid stepping out unnecessarily, especially during the peak afternoon hours.
Prioritize hydration: Increase the intake of water and use Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS).
Sun protection: Keep the head covered when outdoors and opt for light-colored, breathable clothing to mitigate the effects of the sun.
