A major corruption scandal has surfaced in Sindh’s education sector after the Controller of the Mirpurkhas Board, currently in custody of the Anti-Corruption Establishment, reportedly disclosed details of an extensive bribery network operating across multiple educational boards.
The revelations point to alleged large-scale financial irregularities involving the manipulation of examination results, illegal transfers and postings, and tampering with official academic records.
According to initial findings, millions of rupees are said to have been routed through senior officials and intermediaries within the provincial education system, raising serious concerns about transparency and governance in Sindh’s educational institutions.
In its notices, the Anti-Corruption Establishment alleged that within a short span of time, approximately Rs20 crore was transferred from various Sindh education boards to the Department of Universities and Boards as bribes. The funds were reportedly linked to manipulation of examination results, alteration of administrative records, and transfers and postings.
According to the inquiry, the alleged payments were routed through Deputy Secretary Farhan Akhtar and ultimately reached the Secretary of Boards and Universities, Express News reported on Monday.
Breakdown of the alleged amounts includes Rs7 crore from Karachi Matric and Intermediate Boards, Rs4 crore from Sukkur Board, Rs4 crore from Hyderabad Board, and Rs5 crore from Shaheed Benazirabad (Nawabshah) Board.
For further investigation, notices have been issued to several senior officials, including the Secretaries and Chairpersons of the Karachi Matric Board and Karachi Intermediate Board, Chairperson of Sukkur Board Zahid Ali Channar, and Chairperson of Nawabshah Board Asif Memon.
Former Deputy Secretary Farhan Akhtar, Secretary Nawabshah Board, Section Officer Muhammad Zubair Katbar, and controllers from Sukkur, Larkana, and Hyderabad boards have also been summoned. Moreover, former chairpersons of Mirpurkhas Board and a personal secretary to a provincial minister have been called for questioning.
