Petrol prices in Pakistan are expected to rise further as the government considers increasing the petroleum levy to boost revenue and meet conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to recent reports.
Reports suggest that discussions are ongoing to further raise the petroleum levy, even though collections are already projected to surpass the annual target of Rs. 1,468 billion.
Earlier, on April 4, the government increased the prices of both petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs26.77 per liter, despite no change in international fuel rates.
The hike was driven mainly by an additional tax burden imposed on petroleum products.
Following the revision, the price of HSD was set at Rs380.19 per liter, up from Rs353.42, marking a 7.5% increase. Petrol was raised to Rs393.35 per liter from Rs366.6, reflecting a 7.3% jump.
Officials said that the adjustment was tax-driven rather than market-based, as global prices remained stable. Diesel, a key fuel for transport and agriculture, continues to have a major impact on inflation.
