BAHAWALNAGAR: A case that had the nation doing a double-take was registered this week at the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency, sending whispers through legal and political circles alike.
According to reporter Zulqarnain Haider, two brothers, Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif, now stand accused under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, PECCA, for alleged cryptocurrency fraud. The complainant, Islamabad resident Hassan Mohsin, claims he was duped by the duo in a digital currency deal that went sour.
The gravity of the names sent ripples through the district courts as news broke. Could it be?

The accused wasted no time. Both men approached the court seeking pre-arrest bail, with their defense counsel vehemently denying the charges. “A false case has been registered against Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif,” the counsel told the court, adding that “there is no connection of Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif with the WhatsApp number” cited in the FIR.
Presiding over the matter, Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka took up the bail plea. After hearing initial arguments, the court granted interim relief.
The Sharifs have secured pre-arrest bail until May 5, with the court approving their release on surety bonds of twenty thousand rupees each.
The next hearing is scheduled soon, and all eyes are on what evidence the NCCIA will produce to substantiate the crypto fraud allegations.
But here’s the twist that puts the whole saga into perspective: these Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif are, in fact, residents of Fort Abbas, District Bahawalnagar, Punjab — two local brothers who just happen to share names with the country’s most famous political siblings.
