BROOKLYN PARK, Minn: A small single-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Crystal Airport on Friday, killing both people on board, including a North Dakota state representative.
The Beechcraft F33A went down around 11:51 a.m. at Southbrook Park, just northwest of the airport near the intersection of 62nd Avenue North and Florida Avenue North. The plane caught fire immediately upon impact, but no injuries or property damage were reported on the ground.

One of the victims was identified as Rep. Liz Conmy, a Democrat from Fargo, N.D. The pilot’s identity has not been released.
Witnesses reported hearing unusual engine noises and seeing erratic flight patterns before the crash, which produced a large fireball and black smoke. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash. NTSB investigators arrived at the scene on Saturday, but no official determination has been made. While some observers have speculated about engine failure or carburetor icing, authorities have not confirmed any factors.
Crystal Airport was temporarily closed but reopened by 2 p.m. Friday. The wreckage has been removed, though scorched ground and damaged trees remain at the crash site.
