A dispute has emerged between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab over the supply of water from the Galiyat region to Murree, with KP demanding more than Rs64 billion in outstanding dues.
KP government underscores concerns over resource sharing, alleging unauthorized water extraction despite facing its own shortages.
KP authorities have sent letters to the federal government and Punjab, saying that since 1947, Punjab owes Rs64.62 billion for water usage.
The letter highlights that Galiyat itself is facing a water shortage, while the Murree Water Board is allegedly drawing water from the area without authorization, extracting around 500,000 gallons daily without any formal agreement or payment.
It further calls for stopping ongoing water supply infrastructure work by the Murree Water Board in Galiyat, including the construction of a 2-million-gallon water tank in Donga Gali, which is reportedly being carried out without approval from the Galiyat Development Authority.
Meanwhile, KP Finance Adviser Muzzammil Aslam said that Punjab must immediately clear dues of around Rs65 billion, adding that Galiyat’s water has been used for Murree since the creation of Pakistan.
