Karachi could face a water shortfall after another major power breakdown at K-Electric’s Dhabeji Pumping Station on Monday.
According to details, the outage at the pumping station was caused by K-Electric. Officials fear that the breakdown may affect the water distribution system. A spokesperson for the Water Corporation said that the issue occurred in the second phase of the Dhabeji facility.
The spokesperson further explained that two supply lines have been affected due to the power outage and resulting back pressure in the system. Immediate repair work is expected to begin soon.
Frequent power breakdowns are negatively impacting Karachi’s water supply network. The Water Corporation has informed K-Electric’s management about the issue.
It is worth mentioning that that work to connect a newly constructed pipeline with the existing network at the Dhabeji Pumping Station began on Saturday, a process expected to cause a shortfall of up to 250 million gallons per day (MGD) of water for around 48 hours.
The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said that the final interconnection of Transmission Line No. 5 started on Saturday evening and is scheduled for completion within two days.
A spokesperson for the utility said the shutdown, which is in effect from 12 noon on April 25 to April 27, is part of the KWSC Improvement Program. The initiative is aimed at upgrading and modernizing Karachi’s ageing water supply infrastructure.
