KARACHI: After years of dust clouds, traffic bottlenecks, and rain-soaked misery, the Sindh government has finally moved to reclaim the troubled University Road Red Line BRT project from its private contractor, handing responsibility to the Frontier Works Organization (FWO).

According to officials, a formal agreement has been finalized with FWO to complete the long-delayed project “on a war footing.”

The decision comes after mounting public anger over the slow pace of work, which left University Road scarred by endless excavations and half-finished structures.

For residents, the project became synonymous with daily headaches: choking dust storms, flooded trenches during monsoon rains, and spiraling fuel costs as traffic crawled through bottlenecks.

Today, CM Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah also accepted that the BRT project is cause of humiliation for the Sindh government. Having said that, he also pointed out the infamous ‘strait of Hormouz’ meme.

“The previous contractor failed to deliver, and citizens paid the price,” a Sindh government source acknowledged, adding that strict monitoring will now accompany FWO’s accelerated schedule.

The Red Line BRT, once touted as a flagship initiative to ease Karachi’s transport woes, instead turned into a symbol of civic disruption. Commuters and shopkeepers along University Road endured years of uncertainty, with livelihoods and daily routines upended by construction delays.

Officials insist the change of contractor marks a turning point. “This is about restoring public trust,” one source said, noting that FWO’s involvement is expected to bring discipline and speed to a project that has tested Karachi’s patience for far too long.
