A major development has taken place in the case of a young woman allegedly killed after being declared kari in Khairpur, as a court has ordered the main suspect, a local feudal figure, to be sent to jail while another accused has been remanded in police custody for further investigation.
The incident occurred in the Tando Masti area of Khairpur, where 20-year-old Khalida Chandio was brutally killed following accusations of karo kari (so-called honour killing).
Police arrested an influential local landlord who allegedly presided over a jirga that ordered the killing, and he was later presented before the court.
During proceedings, a civil judge heard the case against the accused, Qaiser Chandio and Wali Muhammad Chandio. The court ordered Qaiser Chandio to be sent to jail, while Wali Muhammad Chandio was handed over to police on a four-day physical remand.
The court recorded separate statements from both suspects before issuing its orders. According to police officials, Qaiser Chandio also confessed to the killing during the hearing, further strengthening the case.
It is worth noting that a jirga was reportedly held in the village of Bato Chandio days earlier, where the victim was declared kari. Following the decision, her relatives allegedly shot her dead in front of a crowd.
Police have since arrested a total of 18 individuals, including key suspects. Authorities also detained cleric Munir Chandio, who allegedly conducted the victim’s burial quietly, as part of an expanded investigation into the case.
