KARACHI: Karachi residents can expect a slight reprieve from the sweltering conditions that gripped the city on Saturday and Sunday as weakening high pressure over the Arabian Sea allows sea breezes to moderate temperatures.
Unofficial Met experts told MM News that maximum temperatures are forecast to reach 33 to 35 degrees Celsius across most of the city, with isolated areas potentially touching 37 degrees. However, meteorologists emphasized that the intense humidity and suffocating heat experienced on Saturday will not persist.
“The high-pressure system that was dominating the region has weakened considerably,” a meteorological expert said. “While its ridge still extends over Balochistan and Sindh, the center has shifted further into the Arabian Sea, reducing its direct impact on the city.”
The improvement is attributed to the activation of sea winds, which are expected to penetrate the city more effectively from midday onwards. Westerly sea breezes will commence after 12:00 PM local time, blowing at sustained speeds of 16 to 22 kilometers per hour, with occasional gusts reaching 35 to 45 kmph.
A low-level jet stream over the Arabian Sea is further reinforcing these maritime winds, ensuring continued ventilation throughout the day despite not making direct landfall near Karachi.
Sunday’s weather pattern will follow a typical diurnal progression: light fog may reduce visibility during morning hours, followed by the establishment of cooling sea breezes in the afternoon. Conditions are expected to show clear improvement by evening, with nighttime temperatures offering relative comfort compared to recent days.
Experts stressed that while the day will remain hot, it does not meet the criteria for a heatwave classification.
