Samsung is set to pull the plug on its messaging app in July, asking users to switch to Google Messages.
According to an end of service announcement published on the tech giant’s U.S. support website, Samsung Messages will be discontinued in July, impacting users of Samsung smartphones and other gadgets.
To switch to Google Messages, Samsung advises users to download the app from the Google Play Store if it isn’t already installed, and then set it as the default messaging service. Some users may also receive an in-app prompt to help guide them through the transition.
Samsung says moving to Google Messages will unlock new features, including the latest AI capabilities from Google Gemini. These include an experimental “Remix” tool for generating images within chats, AI-powered reply suggestions, and improved media sharing, allowing higher-quality photos to be sent between Android and iOS devices via RCS messaging.
The company added that users running older versions of Android (Android 11 or earlier) will not be affected by the discontinuation of Samsung Messages.
To check your Android version on a Samsung device, open Settings, go to “Software Information,” and look for “Android version.”
