Report reveals Pak youth at risk due to scrolling stress

KARACHI: While Pakistan has managed to outpace several of its regional neighbors in the newly released World Happiness Report 2026, a sobering subtext has emerged regarding the country’s “silent health crisis”: the physiological and mental toll of excessive social media consumption.

The report, released to mark the United Nations International Day of Happiness, ranks Pakistan 104th out of 147 nations. While this places the country ahead of India (116th) and Bangladesh (127th), researchers have issued a global “health warning” over the “algorithmically curated” digital environments that are increasingly defining the lives of young Pakistanis.

-The 5-Hour Threshold
The 2026 report introduces a critical health metric, identifying five hours of daily usage as the “tipping point” where social media transitions from a tool for connectivity to a driver of clinical distress. In Pakistan—where a burgeoning youth population and affordable data have led to a “TikTok-first” digital culture—the health implications are profound.

Medical experts and contributors to the report note that “heavy” usage is consistently associated with:
Elevated Cortisol Levels: The “stress hormone” remains chronically high due to constant notification pings and the social comparison trap.

Sleep Deprivation: The “blue light” effect is disrupting circadian rhythms in urban centers like Karachi and Lahore, leading to a rise in metabolic and cognitive issues among students.
Sedentary Risks: The shift from physical community interaction to “digital-only” engagement is contributing to rising rates of early-onset lifestyle diseases.

-A Regional Paradox
Interestingly, the report highlights a paradox for the Middle East and South Asia. Unlike the “dramatic decline” in well-being seen in the West (USA, Canada, and Western Europe), moderate social media use in Pakistan—defined as under one hour per day—is actually linked to *higherlife satisfaction than having no digital presence at all.

“In a society where traditional physical spaces for youth are often limited, moderate digital use serves as a vital ‘social health’ valve,” the report suggests. However, the line between “connection” and “consumption” is thinning.

-The Health Policy Gap
The findings come at a time when Pakistan’s healthcare system is already grappling with the “double burden” of infectious and non-communicable diseases. The “digital blues” now add a third layer.

“We are seeing a generation that is physically present but mentally and hormonally taxed,” said a local health analyst. “The report makes it clear: Pakistan’s 104th rank is a fragile one if we do not address the sedentary and psychological costs of our 24/7 digital footprint.”

As Finland celebrates its ninth year at the top of the ladder—built on a foundation of high trust and physical social support—the message for Pakistan is clear: the path to national health may require looking up from the screen.
