Punjab is witnessing an unprecedented surge in dog bite cases, with tens of thousands of residents affected across the province.
According to the latest report from the Punjab Health Department, over 436,000 people have been bitten between 2024 and October 2025, highlighting serious gaps in both treatment and stray dog population control.
According to the report, hospitals have vaccines available, but there is a shortage of critical injections such as “rabies immunoglobulin.”
From 2024 to October 2025, over 436,000 people were affected, with Dera Ghazi Khan at the top with 25,863 reported cases. Multan reported 25,113 cases, Rahim Yar Khan 26,488, and Rawalpindi 24,404 cases.
Rajanpur had 22,767, Mianwali 17,554, and Kasur 16,755 dog bite cases.
In a related government meeting, it was decided that only incurable or injured dogs may be humanely euthanized. Sterilization will be used to control the stray dog population.
Under the Animal Birth Control policy, killing dogs is prohibited; therefore, population control will be carried out through sterilization.
