The sinking of Iranian warship Iris Dena with a torpedo in international waters off Sri Lanka’s coast by a United States submarine has spared backlash as the vessel was invited by India to a navel event.

In a Pentagon briefing on Wednesday, Hegseth said the strike on the Iranian warship was the “first such attack on an enemy since World War II”.

Sri Lanka’s navy said 87 bodies had been recovered and 32 sailors were rescued after an Iranian military ship sank just outside the island’s territorial waters.

India invited Iran to participate in the MILAN 2026 naval exercise, and Iran accepted the invitation by sending a contingent of around 200 sailors.

The Iranian personnel were still in India when the conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance erupted. After the exercise concluded, the vessel began its return journey from India with more than 200 sailors on board.

According to allegations circulating in some reports, India informed the United States about the presence of the Iranian vessel in the region. Shortly afterward, the US Navy reportedly intercepted the ship in the Indian Ocean and sank it using several torpedoes.

Meanwhile, Iranian foreign ministry said that the Iranian Naval Ship Iris Dena which was shot by US was unarmed as the weapon systems were kept in a secured & non-operational mode.

Iran’s decoy strategy: US bombs jets that turn out to be paint on the ground
US Central Command (CENTCOM) has claimed it destroyed most of Iran’s missile launchers, fighter jets and 11 Iranian vessels operating in the Gulf of Oman. “Two days ago, the Iranian regime had 11 ships in the Gulf of Oman. Today, they have ZERO,” CENTCOM said in a statement posted on the social media platform X. However, there are indications that several US airstrikes may have targeted Iranian decoys. Videos recently released by the United States showing strikes on what were believed to be Iranian jets and helicopters later appeared to depict painted images on the ground rather than actual equipment.
