As many as nine sick lions were euthanised in government-run zoos across the province over the past few weeks.
The Punjab Captive Wildlife Management Committee (CWMC) has authorized the humane euthanasia of 10 critically ill and incurable lions across government zoos in Punjab to end their prolonged suffering.
Following approval, nine lions located in Lahore Zoo, Lahore Safari Zoo, and Bahawalpur Zoo were euthanised in phases.
Mudassar Hassan, Additional Chief Wildlife Ranger for Central Punjab, said the decision was taken with the approval of the CWMC after veterinary assessments concluded that the animals were suffering from severe illnesses and disabilities with no prospect of recovery.
According to him, the affected lions were kept at the Bahawalpur Zoo, Lahore Zoo, and the Lahore Safari Zoo.
They were reportedly in significant distress due to prolonged medical conditions.
“The animals were in pain because of illness and disability.
After thorough review and expert consultation, they were given a peaceful death to end their suffering,” the official said, adding that the euthanasia was carried out a few days ago.
Punjab wildlife authorities maintained that the step was taken in accordance with established procedures and animal welfare guidelines.
