Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has achieved another major milestone in the country’s Human Spaceflight Programme.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), SUPARCO has successfully completed the second phase of astronaut selection.
ISPR stated that following the initial screening process, two candidates have been shortlisted. Comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations of both shortlisted Pakistani candidates have been completed in China.
The statement further said that the shortlisted candidates will undergo astronaut training at the China Astronaut Centre.
After completing the training, one candidate will be selected for a space mission in October, while the second will be considered for a mission in November.
According to ISPR, Pakistan and China signed a bilateral Astronaut Cooperation Agreement in February 2025.
The agreement was finalised under the leadership of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, whose vision and support played a key role in enabling Pakistan’s participation in human spaceflight.
ISPR added that China selected Pakistan as its first foreign partner in its astronaut programme, calling the move historic and a reflection of China’s strong and enduring support for Pakistan.
