The recent re-arrest of former Indian Navy officer Commander Purnendu Tiwari in Qatar has reignited a longstanding and sensitive issue concerning the Indian military, drawing renewed international attention.
According to the Indian newspaper Indian Express, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that Commander Purnendu Tiwari was taken into custody again in Qatar.
It is worth noting that he was originally arrested in August 2022, along with seven other former Indian Navy officers.
Media reports indicate that in October 2023, a Qatari court sentenced eight former Indian Navy officers to death on charges of espionage, causing significant concern in India.
Despite diplomatic efforts by the Indian government, Purnendu Tiwari was not extradited to India in February 2024 due to the serious nature of the charges.
