Islamabad: The federal government has decided to replace the designs of all currency notes ranging from Rs10 to Rs5,000 and has issued a clear timeline for the transition.
According to official sources, no currency note will be withdrawn or demonetised. Instead, the design of all existing banknotes will be changed.
Banks across the country have been formally informed about the timeline for the replacement process.
The decision, taken during 2025, covers all denominations currently in circulation, including Rs10, Rs20, Rs50, Rs100, Rs500, Rs1,000 and Rs5,000 notes. Alongside new designs, the government has also decided to upgrade the security features of the currency.
Officials noted that the total value of currency currently in public circulation has exceeded Rs10,260 billion. Between 2024 and 2025, the volume of cash in circulation increased by approximately Rs1,000 billion.
Authorities believe the redesign is part of a broader strategy to modernise the financial system and gradually move the country towards a digital and cashless economy.
Under the plan, the new currency notes will be introduced during 2026. In addition to paper notes, the government will also introduce polymer (plastic) currency on a trial basis.
If polymer notes prove more durable and cost-effective than paper notes, they may be adopted more widely in the future.
