Rawalpindi is set to be reorganized under a new local government framework that will divide the city into two separate towns, each led by its own mayor. In addition, four deputy mayors will be appointed as part of the revised administrative structure.
The two urban units will initially be known as Rawal Town One and Rawal Town Two, although their names may be changed at a later stage, Express News reported on Sunday.
The boundary between the two towns will follow Murree Road, with union councils on one side placed under Town One and those on the opposite side assigned to Town Two.
Alongside the urban redivision, a distinct Potohar Town will be established to govern rural union councils. Other tehsils within Rawalpindi district will also be converted into towns, including Kallar Syedan, Kahuta, Gujar Khan, and Taxila.
As part of these reforms, the district council will be permanently dissolved, and the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation will be disbanded. The new town-based governance system will come into effect once the Punjab government announces the schedule for local government elections.
Provincial authorities are considering holding local government elections across Punjab on a non-party basis during the first half of the coming year, with April or May seen as the most likely timeframe. The restructuring will also involve a reorganization of union councils under the new system.
