Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced the discovery of hydrocarbon reserves at its exploratory well LAL-X1, located in Kashmore district of Sindh.
The development was shared in a notice sent to the Pakistan Stock Exchange.
According to the notice, PPL, the operator of the Kandhkot Development and Production Lease, has discovered unconventional gas from the Lower Eilbaster Formation at the exploratory well situated in Kashmore district, Sindh.
This marks the first discovery from the Lower Eilbaster Formation within the Kandhkot Development and Production Lease, where PPL is operating with a 100 percent working interest.
Unconventional gas refers to natural gas trapped in tight geological formations such as shale, sandstone, or coal seams, which require advanced extraction techniques like hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. In contrast, conventional gas flows more easily from porous reservoirs.
Drilling at the LAL-X1 well commenced on June 30, 2025, and reached a depth of 1,408 meters to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the middle limestone intervals of the Lower Eilbaster Formation.
According to PPL, post-completion testing showed gas flow of 0.138 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) at a 64/64-inch choke, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 33 psig.
The well results confirm the presence of hydrocarbons in the Lower Eilbaster Formation. Commercial viability will be determined following post-well analysis and the results of future exploratory wells.
It is worth mentioning that last month, PPL also announced the discovery of hydrocarbon reserves at its exploratory well Sawan North Deep-1 ST-1, located in Khairpur district, Sindh.
